The Sword of Shannara (The Original Shannara Trilogy, #1)

Author: Terry Brooks
Book#: 1 out 3
Date Read: 5/1/16 to 5/1/16
Rating: 2 out 5
Summary: Long ago, wars of ancient Evil ruined the world and forced mankind to compete with many other races – gnomes, trolls, dwarfs, and elves. In peaceful Shady Vale, half-elfin Shea Ohmsford knows little of such troubles until giant, forbidding Allanon, with strange Druidic powers, reveals a supposedly-dead Warlock Lord plots to destroy the world.

The sole weapon against this Power of Darkness is the Sword of Shannara, only usable by a true heir of Shannara. On Shea, last of the bloodline, rests the hope of all the races. Soon a Skull Bearer, dread minion of Evil, flies into the Vale to kill Shea. To save the Vale, Shea flees, drawing the Skull Bearer after him.

Review: Apparently, I read this series before but I couldn’t remember until my sister told me that I have read this series. I like this: Image and video hosting by TinyPic when she told me.

The weird thing is, it feel like I’m reading The Lord of the Rings, at the same time that it’s not. I don’t mind a few common fantasy elements, but Brook’s plot and characters come almost straight out of Tolkien. This may have been acceptable if the writing had come out of Tolkien. The writing is to disappointing with pages and pages spent on describing forests, trees, and mountains. I couldn't care less whether Shea and Flick (they're the hobbits-- I mean the heroes) live or die, and their characterization is weak and badly done. Actually, I was kind of hoping that they would die. The only original character who have some promise was Menion Leah. I liked him till the point where he decided he would rather protect a woman he met a couple of days ago than his long-time friend Shea (wow, what great friend you have).

I know that rambling, but I simply want to fill this space with some form of a review. I doubt I’ll re-read this anything soon. I recommend this series if you are a huge Tolkien fan, this a great book series for you. If not, I guess this will be a good book if you are not a huge fantasy genre fan.
